IAM
IAM（アイアム）は、フランスのヒップホップ・ユニット。マルセイユで1989年に結成された。「IAM」とは「Invasion Arrivée de Mars (火星からの侵略)」の略であり、Mars(火星)とはマルセイユ(Marseille)を隠喩する語として頻繁に歌詞に登場する。

来歴
[編集]ユニットは、1985年にAkhenatonとKhéopsによってLively Crewの名で結成された。1987年にはB.Boys Stanceに改名され、Shurik'n、Freeman、Imhotepが新たに加入した。1989年には現在の名前であるIAMとなり、翌年には最初のミックステープ『IAM Concept』がリリースされた。大手のレコード会社であるヴァージン・レコードと契約を交わしてファースト・アルバム『...de la planète Mars』（1991年）、セカンド・アルバム『Ombre est lumière』をリリースした。1997年のアルバム『L'école du micro d'argent』は、発売後2日でゴールド・アルバムとなる売り上げを記録し、IAMの認知度を上げた。
この1997年の大ヒット後、メンバーたちはソロ活動も開始した。Akhenatonは既に1995年にソロ・アルバム『Métèque et mat』をリリースしていたが、これに引き続いてShurik'nとFreemanのソロ・アルバムがそれぞれ1998年と1999年にリリースされた。Akhenatonはその後もソロ・アルバム『Sol Invictus』（2001年）、『Soldat de fortune』（2006年）をリリースしている。グループとしての活動も続いており、『ルヴォアール・アン・プランタン』（2003年）、『Saison 5』（2007年）をリリースしている。
彼らの楽曲は、社会的、政治的テーマを取り上げることが多く、都市生活、文化的アイデンティティ、移民問題などについてのメッセージをリリックに込めている。IAMは、アメリカのヒップホップ・アーティストともコラボレーションしており、ウータン・クランとの共作が有名。これにより、フランス語ヒップホップを国際的な注目の的にした。
