Welcome to WikiProject Devon

This is a collaboration area and group of editors dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of the English county of Devon.

Located in the south west of the United Kingdom, Devon's county town is Exeter and its largest city is Plymouth.

Scope

• Articles about all subjects related to Devon, with special emphasis on geography (settlements, landmarks, etc.)
• People are included, but not those whose only connection with the county is that they were born or died here.

Goals

• On a day-to-day basis, keep articles on Devon free from vandalism and ensure that they are not degraded by sub-standard edits. The list of recent changes below shows the edits that have been made recently to articles under this project.
• Improve existing articles by editing them. This includes the addition of new referenced content, copyediting (improvements to style, grammar, layout, spelling, etc.), and dealing with problem tags – see the list here (warning: there are a lot!).
• Identify omissions in the coverage of Devon. Suggestions for new articles can be made on this project's Talk page, but the bold way is to write a new article yourself.
• Identify existing or newly-created articles that should be included in this project and assess them, as described below.
• The ultimate aim is to improve all Devon-related articles towards Featured Article status. This will take a long time, but we work towards it by a gradual process of improvement through these stages: Stub > Start > Class C > Class B > Good Article > Featured Article. Only 5 steps from the most basic entry!

If you're new to Wikipedia and thinking of becoming an editor – welcome! Here are a few resources that will help get you up to speed on how things work around here.

• "Editing Wikipedia" is a downloadable PDF brochure that gives you a basic introduction to how to edit Wikipedia. You will learn what Wikipedia is and how it works, how to navigate Wikipedia, how and why you should contribute to Wikipedia, important rules that keep Wikipedia reliable, how to edit with VisualEditor and using wiki markup, how to add content, and etiquette for interacting with other contributors.
• Wikipedia:Tutorial is a web-based introduction.
• Help:Getting started provides links to several other resources that are useful to new editors.
• When it all seems too complex, The Teahouse is a friendly place to help new editors become accustomed to Wikipedia culture, ask questions, and develop community relationships.
• The Talk page of this project is the place to ask any questions about editing Devon articles.
• When you've created a user account (see WP:REGISTER for why this is a good idea), feel free to sign our informal list of participants.

• In common with many other WikiProjects, we use a quality assessment of Stub to FA and an importance scale of Low to Top.

This project broadly follows the guidelines of its parent, the UK Geography WikiProject, on how to write about settlements.

Here are some tasks awaiting attention: Article requests : • Geology of Devon – this is currently a short section in the main Devon article, but it needs its own page, like Geology of Somerset or Geology of Cornwall. • Some villages and parishes still need articles. See the redlinks at Template:Devon parishes – as of 15 Jul 2019, there are 5 outstanding. • Several Dartmoor tors are notable enough for their own articles. • Several minor rivers should have articles, see the relevant redlinks in the lists here and here. See the guidance for writing these articles here. • Some District councils (see Template:Local authorities in Devon - most of these are redirects to the District). Cleanup : • List of people from Devon – see its Talk page. Expand : • Many of the village and parish articles are very short and need considerable expansion. Some examples are Brushford, Romansleigh, Dartmoor Forest and Brixton, but there are many more. • Devon (UK Parliament constituency) – the lists of MPs are incomplete. A good source is the articles in the Transactions of the Devonshire Association (1912–1918 and 1925) by J. J. Alexander. Links to online copies of the Transactions are here. • Valley of the Rocks.
