Template for excessive details
[edit]Need a template/module that returns the number of unique internal links on a page, given a namespace (e.g. 0 for mainspace)
[edit]Akin to {{NUMBEROFSECTIONS}}, I'd like to have a template called {{NUMBEROFUNIQUELINKS}}.
To get the number of unique mainspace links on a page, in this example, a WikiProject report page, the code would look like:
{{NUMBEROFUNIQUELINKS|Wikipedia:WikiProject Kentucky/OldIssues|0}}or{{NUMBEROFUNIQUELINKS|Wikipedia:WikiProject Kentucky/OldIssues|ns=0}}
The default for ns would be for "all namespaces", returning the number of all unique pages that are linked.
If unique links to a multiple number of namespaces are desired in the result, the code would look like either
{{NUMBEROFUNIQUELINKS|pagename|0|1}}or{{NUMBEROFUNIQUELINKS|pagename|ns=0|ns2=1}}
My particular need for this is to obtain the number of unique articles (in the form of internal links) returned in the results of a {{Database report}} on a page. I use such reports to create specialized lists of issues in articles. With the number returned, I can use it to demonstrate when a backlog exists, or for comparing the number of articles affected between different types of issues (useful for backlog ordering), or for comparing the number of articles affected by a particular type of issue between different WikiProjects.
I assume this will require an underlying module. (I'd write this myself but my experience with module code is next to zero at this point.)
I have asked for something like this in the Community Wishlist, but it has been marked as "Community opportunity".

- I would encourage the specification be changed slightly to stay in numbered parameters to allow for multiple namespaces to be specified, so
{{NUMBEROFUNIQUELINKS|Wikipedia:WikiProject Kentucky/OldIssues|0|1}}would return the number of unique links from both the article: and talk: namespaces. VanIsaac, GHTV contrabout 20:42, 29 November 2025 (UTC)
Done great idea. Stefen 𝕋ower's got the power!!1! Gab • Gruntwerk 21:41, 29 November 2025 (UTC)
- Note: For casual readers, the "Done" above doesn't mean the template has been created, just that I changed the request. Stefen 𝕋ower Huddle • Handiwerk 22:28, 8 January 2026 (UTC)
- I have went ahead and created a template/module based on the simple case of returning just the number of article links. See Template:Article link count. I am new to creating modules, so I decided to not tackle the more complex version shown above for now. Eventually I may get around to creating that, faster if anyone has a need for it. AA Rosettes
[edit]There is an existing wiki template for Michelin stars. In the UK and Ireland, the AA Rosette fulfills a very similar role to the Michelin Guide system.
However, AA operate the Rosette system for restaurants and use a separate star system for B&Bs and restaurants with rooms. One star is not equivalent to one rosette.
I noted when editing The Witchery that this causes some confusion. This restaurant is rated by AA under both systems (and both ratings are from 2026). Using stars for both scales makes it hard to parse and to the casual viewer it might seem like the restaurant is rated poorly under the rosette system. Two rosettes is in fact exceptional!
Is there support for creating an "AA rosettes" template, with the same functionality as the "Michelin stars" template but with the Rosette symbol instead?
Grommmet (talk) 15:30, 8 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Grommmet: The template wasn't hard to do:

. Some more changes will be needed before it is mainspace ready, but before that please check at an appropriate Wikiproject if there is support for using this template. -MPGuy2824 (talk) 05:18, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- @MPGuy2824: Thanks, appreciate you taking the time to build it - looks exactly as I pictured it! I will seek further input. Grommmet (talk) 02:37, 28 January 2026 (UTC)
- Will there be a need to show 2/5 rosettes, like

for example? -MPGuy2824 (talk) 06:15, 28 January 2026 (UTC)
- Personally I would say no need, the AA awards themselves just display the number of rosettes (i.e. no blankspace or greyed out icons). Grommmet (talk) 10:57, 28 January 2026 (UTC)
- Ok. Removing the code for those conditions has simplified the template a lot. When you do get consensus for using this template, please ping me to move this to template-space OR feel free to move it there yourself. I would suggest Template:RosetteRating or something along those lines. -MPGuy2824 (talk) 14:04, 28 January 2026 (UTC)

Change GA nomination and GANentry templates to show certain errors
[edit]See this discussion. I would like to change two templates: {{GA nominee}}, and {{GANentry}}, to show errors under certain conditions.
The GA nominee template currently shows "Please use the |page= parameter to specify the number of the next free GAN review page, or use {{subst:GAN}} instead to find the next free page automatically." if there is no page parameter included. It also shows " This article is not categorized by subtopic. Please edit the |subtopic= parameter on this talk page to include one. For a list of subtopics, please see Wikipedia:Good article nominations." if there is no subtopic parameter. I'd like to add an error for a missing or invalid status parameter, saying "This template must include a status parameter" if it's missing, or "status must be one of the following: blank, onreview, on review, hold, on hold, onhold, 2nd opinion, or 2ndopinion" if it's not valid. I would like all these errors to be red and bold.
I would like to add a new parameter, error, to the GANentry template. It should function as follows:
This wikitext: {{GANentry|1=Example|2=1|shortdesc=|error=This is a test error message}}
should produce the output it normally produces followed by an error message, like so:
Example (talk | history | start review) This is a test error message
Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 13:30, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
- Update: the GANentry modification is done. I will have a go at the GA nomination one at some point if nobody else gets to it. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 19:44, 21 February 2026 (UTC)
- This has now been done. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 10:30, 11 April 2026 (UTC)
Template for displaying usurped urls
[edit]Problem (from Help Desk): There seems to be no good way to handle/display usurped urls in cases other than archive links (which are covered by Template:Usurped).
Solution: A template which displays "usurped" or something in parenthesis next to the link—similar to Template:Website defunct—and displays the url without hyperlinking. Or maybe the url is still linked, but goes first to a warning page asking if people want to continue—I'm not sure why they would, though.
The instigating example is the publisher infobox at University Press of New England, which needs a URL or "none" under Official Website. The problem is that A. It's wrong to say the publisher didn't have a website, so displaying "none" is inaccurate, but B. It's bad to prominently links to usurped sites that could be dangerous for editors and readers. I've added Template:Website defunct for now (seems closest existing template to the desired function), but that does still link to the bad url Placeholderer (talk) 13:13, 20 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Placeholderer: I modified the {{website defunct}} template. Since now, you can make the URL unclickable by adding the
nolinkparameter with any non-empty value. Gamliel Fishkin 22:10, 14 March 2026 (UTC)- Excellent, thanks! Placeholderer (talk) 01:23, 15 March 2026 (UTC)
template for ideologies (-isms, -ite, etc.)
[edit]i have encountered instances of editors removing {{infobox political party}} from political ideologies (eg, Putinism, Nasserism).
i have thought of an alternative to this - Template:Infobox ideology: an infobox for ideologies such as Leninism, Trumpism, and Lulismo. it will include the same parameters from infobox political party, like |ideology, |position and |national_affiliation, albeit some changes for it to match up the usage better.
i have a prototype too: User:Tonkarooson/drafts/Template:Infobox ideology. — Tonkarooson • (📭|edits) 05:25, 14 March 2026 (UTC)
Election bar diagram from German Wikipedia
[edit]Hope this is the correct place to ask (seems like WP:IMP may fit too), but I'd really appreciate if someone could either recreate (or important and anglicize) the Template:Wahldiagramm (ideally all variants but asking particularly for Vergleichswahl Variante 2) from German Wikipedia. It would primarily be useful for local elections on the articles of municipalities and districts (particularly in Germany) but could also find application in all other kinds of, likely smaller, elections.
I'm pretty sure the German one uses sub-pages for the party data and colours, but an import to enwiki would probably work best by simply using the already-existing Template:Party color, not sure if adding a way to link party data makes sense, it's probably best to add parties manually like it is already the case with Template:Election results.

Template:VerticalRainbowMarquee.css
[edit]The template will be a vertical version of Template:Marquee, but with a rainbow. I put the css into my user common css, and here is what it looks like:
The css is here.
If this is the wrong procedure to get everyone to be able to see this cool scrolly text on my user page, please tell me the right way to do it. thank you! (by the way to get the cool rainbow text i just put
<div class="vertical-scroll-text"> Insert text here </div>
onto my sandbox. it only works if you have the css that i have in your common.css) — Preceding unsigned comment added by NS2000000000 (talk • contribs) 22:58, 20 March 2026 (UTC)
Template aside
[edit]Template:Aside probably needs a bit of love (its sole contributor likely left the project seven years ago).
Specifically:
1. Use as a wrapper: If and when T104770 is resolved, I feel this template would best serve the community if its use as a wrapper still rendered as it currently renders, that is, with encasing the parameter text within visible <aside></aside> tags.
2. Use as a page summary: Check the template's function as a page summary for errors. I tried replicating the listed example but could not get the template to display the text on my test page for this purpose: User talk:CapnZapp/asides/botunits. Do note I am not sure there are any bugs in the template code, it could well be that the documentation needs to better enumerate any limitations and/or prerequisites.

Activist / protest groups and movements
[edit]Is there enough potential for a template (or portal) for current and maybe past protest groups such as the People's Music Network, Indivisible, Free DC, 50501, DC Activist Street Band, Rapid Response Choir, Singing Resistance, DC Labor Chorus, and similar groups around the country? Should it be a template or a portal? Kevin Cole (talk) 16:20, 30 March 2026 (UTC)
- You can check out existing templates with "Protest" in the name, e.g. Template:Protests against Trump. —andrybak (talk) 18:35, 30 March 2026 (UTC)
This template indicates that the article contains non-free media that can be replaced with reasonable freely licensed alternatives. For example, the current Auto-Tune article features samples of copyrighted music to illustrate the effect, while one could apply the effect to their own voice recording and release both the original and edited recordings under a free license. Another example is Computer wargame, which features a non-free screenshot despite there likely existing free and open source games.
The template should ideally use the image where the copyright symbol is replaced by the CC symbol or there is an arrow from former to latter. Example:
Template layout:
{{Free alternative|[media type]|[comments]}}
Media types: All [default], Image, Illustration, Photo, Audio, Video (you can add more if you want)
